Music Video Analysis 4 - Paramore - Now

We found this video really quite interesting in the way that the performance and narrative had been blended into one to make up this video. All the way through the video, Hayley Williams is singing the lyrics, but she is also the main character in the narrative. There are no explicitly performance shots because she is in the narrative the whole time. I think this is an interesting way to combine performance and narrative, however I think that for our video since we are using a band, having some shots of the instruments at crucial parts in the song will really enhance the quality of the video.

In terms of the editing of the footage, the majority of the video is in slow motion because the narrative is about some form of war that is going on around her and it is going on in slow motion in front of her eyes. This has been done really well here because although it is in slow motion, the way Hayley has sung the lyrics during filming, she is still singing to the correct pace of the song, even though the footage is moving slower. This is quite a difficult thing to achieve for the performer, but very effective.

The most interesting shot we noticed is the establishing shot where Hayley and the man are stood on either side of the huge tree before he throws the grenade and starts the war. It is a really simple and very achievable shot but it is so effective. It really draws the viewer in to what is going to happen. Followed by the shot/reverse shot of the two, it really helps people understand the narrative in deeper meaning and it just really sets the tone for the whole video.

In terms of the camera movement, a lot of the video appears to have been filmed using a handheld camera. This is really effective for this video because it helps to signify and increase the intensity of the chaotic situation. The narrative is very explosive and clearly very unstable so having an array of unstable shots really helps to communicate that idea.

The mise-en-scene of this video is really quite interesting where they have used powder paint as props to create the blood from the wounded soldiers in the video. This is really powerful and effective the way it has been done as the most intense part of the song is where it is used most. They have edited it so that the paint explosions happen on the beats of the music which is really powerful.
The other element of the mise-en-scene that is really interesting is the dark and spooky location with all of the smoke. This really helps set the scene and the atmosphere for the mood of the whole video. Its really dark and dim, which of course matches up with the narrative.
